Impact

Dr. Randy Watts
I am proud to be a part of a school that cares about mattering to the community. Brookwood has made an impact on the community and wants to continue to make an impact on the community. Brookwood wants to be a positive contributor.

Recently, Brookwood School was awarded the Bob "Hutch" Hutchison Legacy Award from the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce at the Community Impact Awards Ceremony. This award is given annually to an organization that has shown service and involvement in the community. Further, the organization needs to have demonstrated staying power, longevity, and the ability to adjust to the changing economic climate.

As Brookwood celebrates its 50th birthday this year, this recognition underscores  the maturity that the school has developed and experienced over the past fifty years. It is a reminder that Brookwood has made and is making an impact in Thomasville and Thomas County.

In the independent school world, Heads of School along with their Boards might conduct a hypothetical “smart bomb” test. That is, if a highly precise smart bomb took out your school, but did not damage anything in the surroundings, would anybody notice?

Independent Schools run the risk of becoming insulated from the rest of the community. They serve their students and families, but at times, do not reach into their surrounding community. I have spoken with fellow Heads of School who have admitted that if their school disappeared off the face of the earth, it would be business as usual for the rest of the community.

I am proud to be a part of a school that cares about mattering to the community. Brookwood has made an impact on the community and wants to continue to make an impact on the community. Brookwood wants to be a positive contributor.

Here are just a few recent examples of how Brookwood has engaged with the broader community:
  • The Foundations of Innovation (FOI) has partnered with the Thomasville Center for the Arts Public Art Team to produce the public art exhibition, entitled “'70s Culture: Roll With It.” This is Brookwood’s second public art exhibition in the the “UnVacant Lot” on West Jackson Street in downtown Thomasville.
  • Harper Elementary School, Brookwood School, and the Thomasville Center for the Arts have created a collaborative project entitled “COLAB” around the art and science of bugs.
  • Brookwood has hosted the following organizations for events on our campus: Killearn Lakes Taekwondo, YMCA, Thomas County Stars, Thomas University, Lee University, Tallahassee Storm AAU Basketball, TASA Futbol Club, and PEAK Performance Girls AAU Basketball.
  • Brookwood hosted a presentation by Dr. Michael Thompson, an internationally recognized speaker and author on parenting, which was open to the public.

Thomasville is strengthened by our interconnectedness. We are strong because we are inextricably intertwined. The schools, churches, hospitals, banks, big and small businesses, non-profits, and other organizations are all dependent on one another for our mutual livelihood.

As a final thought, as we are living during a time of challenge characterized by polarized and discordant discourse, let’s all remember how much we need one another. Rising tides raise all ships.
