After a tough loss to Maclay in their home opener, the Brookwood Warriors are set to get back on the road. This time they will be traveling to Mayo, Florida, to take on the Lafayette Hornets.
This Brookwood team didn’t expect to be barnstormers or especially prolific this season. This 2024 campaign is very much so a transition year for the program after losing some major talent on the offensive side of the ball.
As Brookwood readies itself for Lafayette, they will face a team that runs a very different offense than they saw last week. Maclay ran their offense through quarterback Georgia Grant with him leading the team in rush attempts and passing quite often. Grant threw for 322 yards on the Warriors for four touchdowns. Whereas the Hornets have a tough run game balanced with a solid passing game.
Their last game, a 21-13 loss to Suwannee, saw QB Tucker Higginbotham throw for 215 yards on 14 completions, while the run game ran mostly through junior Dayne McCray who had 13 rushes for 53 yards.
Brookwood head coach Shane Boggs spoke about the Hornets tough run game and their ability to run the option.
“Defensively, we have to align well, we have to read the right key, we have to separate from blocks and be physical in everything we do whether it be taking on blocks or tackling,” Boggs said. “We’ve done that well at times, but we haven’t created consistency.”
Offensively, the focus is on development. Boggs specifically mentioned the warriors run game, which has noticeably improved as the season has progressed.
“We have to continue to develop our run game,” Boggs said. “We had 93 yards last week. We’d love to keep improving in that respect and within the run game there needs to be an ability to run the ball inside and outside.”
Brookwood will take on Lafayette in Mayo, Florida this Friday night with the game slated for 7:30 p.m.
