Dr. Chason welcomes new patients

Shaw Center for Women’s Health is excited to welcome a familiar face to its practice on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Dr. Sarah Chason, a Cairo native and graduate of Brookwood School’s Class of 2012, has returned to Thomasville to practice obstetrics and gynecology and will be accepting new patients.

Prior to returning home, Chason attended University of Virginia, studying philosophy. She then completed medical school at Mercer University’s Savannah Campus, where she finished her residency at Memorial.

Chason explained she has always had an interest in medicine with an affinity for science throughout high school.

“I liked the idea of helping people,” she said. “As cheesy as it sounds, it’s true.”

While Chason was destined to help people, it wasn’t until her residency that she decided the OBGYN path was for her.

“During med school you work with all the specialties and all the patient populations,” she said. “After about a week in OBGYN, I just realized how much I enjoyed caring for women and how much fun I was having with it.”

Chason found the work meaningful and exciting, but said she kept an open mind about where the future might take her.

During her late 20s though, she found herself wanting to move closer to family and sought opportunities to regain the sense of community she had come to know and love during her youth.

“Toward the end of medical school and during residency, I started looking at coming back here,” she said.

Having additional primary care providers in rural Georgia was a win for both Chason and the area, as doctors often find themselves in more populated cities inside large facilities.

“Most of Georgia is rural and underserved, so I feel really lucky there was already a place I called home and loved that met that category,” she said. “It feels really good to be filling that need because I know it’s a huge thing for our state.”

Because rural communities are often times smaller, Chason will now see patients that she has grown up alongside, which she said is taking some getting used to.

“In the past year, I have taken care of some people who I’ve known and am close to, so I think that was a good introduction,” she said. “For me, I hope people feel comfortable coming to me, but I know OBGYN is an especially sensitive area of healthcare.”

Due to its sensitivity, Chason is very focused on patient- centered care and wants her patients to feel heard and seen.

“I like to discuss all options and make decisions together,” she said. “If patients have other ideas or concerns, I’m certainly all ears.”

Chason is excited to begin welcoming clients on Thursday and thanks those who have already welcomed her. To schedule an appointment with Chason, contact Shaw Center for Women’s Health at 229-226-8800.
