The season opener Friday night at Westfield was one to forget if you’re a Brookwood fan. The Warriors mustered very little offense, offered very little defense and only scored on the last play of the game. It added up to a 55-6 humbling defeat.
Brookwood’s offense was held to 105 total yards. Its two quarterbacks of Pearce Hightower and Roland Waldrop were harassed constantly and completed just 1-of-13 passes in the first half, including an interception returned for a touchdown, and the Warriors punted seven times total.
Westfield scored touchdowns on six straight possessions in the first half. It led 48-0 at halftime and never was challenged.
“They executed better than us. They played with more energy than us. They coached better than us,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “No way in the world do I think they’re 55-6 better than us. They played really well tonight, but we helped them a ton. As we helped them, their energy level grew, ours dropped.
“Offensively, for sure in that first half, I can’t tell you how many times we busted things that we’ve been executing well, not just all summer and not just last Friday night, but all week.”
Brookwood’s lone score came on the final play of the game, a three-yard touchdown pass from Waldrop to Isiah Hill. Maybe the touchdown can serve as a momentum boost heading into next week’s tilt at Terrell Academy.
“Like I told them, you can’t let a half of football or a first game define your season. We’re going to do what we can to bounce back,” Boggs said. “Really disappointed in the overall effort.”
Waldrop passed for 63 yards, while Hightower added 35 passing yards.
Briggs Daniel led the Warriors with four receptions for 32 yards. Seth Boggs finished with two receptions for 50 yards.
