Brookwood hires new girls basketball coach

THOMASVILLE — After a very successful 18-9 season, Brookwood has hired Nikolaus Schweikert as their new head girls basketball coach. Schweikert comes into the job with 12 years of coaching experience. Ten of those years were at the varsity level and he has four years of varsity head coaching experience.

Schweikert hails from Northeast Ohio where he experienced a lot of success. Through a connection with boys head coach Nate Van Duyne, Schweikert has found himself in Southwest Georgia.

It’s fair to say that he is prepared, having started watching tape before he ever got to Thomasville. Schweikert likes his team to play fast and quick and likes to mix it up on defense. He did, however, say that he is always willing to adapt his strategies to get the most out of his team.

“As soon as I took the job I started watching all the games that I could. I’m a big race in space type person, so I want the ball to get up the floor quick and I want us to play fast and aggressive and try to push the pace and try to get open layups and open threes,” Schweikert said. “That was kind of our focus this summer was can we get the ball up the floor quick and can we take the right shot. I think with this group there is untapped potential there that we are excited about.”

The Lady Warriors were a solid team last year, finishing 18-9 and advancing to the second round of the state playoffs where they fell to eventual champion Lakeview Academy. Schweikert’s offensive philosophy points towards improved three-point shooting and an emphasis on taking the right shot. It is quite possible that this Lady Warriors team could see their scoring average drastically improve if they can start sinking those threes.
