UMW Men's Tennis Tops Santa Cruz, 5-3, for 2023 C2C Championship

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team dropped all three doubles matches, but rebounded to win the first five singles decisions in winning the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday in Newport News, Va. The Eagles improve to 10-9 on the season.

After falling in three tough doubles matches, UMW got on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Brock Ladehoff at four over Praneet Varade, and Rishi Charan Shankar followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at one over Lucas Chen. Andrew Watson scored a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win at two over Andre Mardirossian, and Artis Hart scored a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win over Sam Hall at three, setting the stage for Peter Leese, who scored a 6-4, 6-3 win at six over Aziz Albayouk for the clinching point.

Watson was named as the tournament MVP, with Hart and Charan Shankar gaining all-tournament honors.

The Eagles will await their fate for the NCAA Tournament, with announcements for qualification coming on Monday.
