Brookwood preparing for scrimmage

The Brookwood Warriors started practicing in full pads on Monday, less than two weeks away from its one and only preseason scrimmage.

That’s about 10 days for head coach Shane Boggs to evaluate his players and assess what players fit what’s positions best. That’s what he intends to do leading up to Brookwood’s first scrimmage on Aug. 9 at home against Pataula.

“I really believe we got better every day last week. We’ve got a long way to go. It’s about being better today than you were yesterday. Obviously, you go from that week and put full pads on and it’s a jump … it was hot (Monday),” Boggs said. “We’re trying to figure out who’s going to be able to separate, run the football, tackle on defense, protect it and make plays on offense.

“I’m pleased with the growth, but we’ve got a long way to go. We’ve got four (practices) this week and three and a walkthrough next week to get ready for a scrimmage, so we’ve got work to do.”

Brookwood is a little more than two weeks away from its regular season opener at Westfield on Aug. 16.

Brookwood lost its share of playmakers from last year’s team that finished 6-5. That includes star quarterback Rodge Waldrop and running back TJ Thomas. Those are just two positions that Boggs needs to find new starters. The evaluation process will continue into the preseason scrimmage next week.

“I feel like when we’re healthy, we’ve got the O-line figured out in terms of the first five,” Boggs said.
“There’s at least one skilled spot on offense that’s up for grabs; at least one DB and one linebacker. There is competition at a bunch of positions and still some that have to be played out. In addition to that, you’re trying to develop depth.”
