Brookwood prepping for Pataula scrimmage

On Friday night the Brookwood Warriors will take the field for the first time against an opponent in a different uniform as they welcome the Pataula Charter Academy Panthers to Thomasville.

“Our kids are going to be really excited to finally go against an opponent. We’ve been hitting each other for a couple weeks,” said Brookwood head football coach Shane Boggs. “From a defensive perspective it’ll be a good barometer for us in terms of everything from  block construction to pursuit to tackling just to see how much we’ve improved. Offensively, we’ve got some new guys in some new spots and we’ll see if we can get out there and make some plays out in space and do a good job of taking care of the ball. Just excited to get out there and get this first scrimmage in.”

This scrimmage will be key for a successful 2024 season for the Warriors, more than most. Brookwood is still undecided at the quarterback position between incoming freshman Roland Waldrop and junior transfer Pearce Hightower. According to Boggs, neither has been able to separate themselves in the battle for the starting spot.

“There just hasn’t been enough separation between the two of them, particularly consistently,” Boggs said. “At this point I’ve told them both to prepare as if they are going every other. They’re really prepared to go 50/50 until somebody creates a big gap.”

Boggs did go on to say that whoever has the hot hand could get more reps in the second half and emphasized that taking care of the football is key to good quarterback play.

Pataula was a decent football team last year, though they lack solid defense.  They finished last season 4-4, scoring an average of 23.1 points per game and allowing an average on 27.  Boggs did bring up their heavy run game as a good challenge for the Warriors defense. Pataula boast a powerful running back Joseph Tanner who stands at 6’0 and is listed at a glaring 205 pounds.

Brookwood will take on Pataula in their preseason scrimmage on Friday night at 7 p.m.
