THOMASVILLE – The Thomasville Lady Bulldogs find themselves above .500 after a solid win over cross-town rival Brookwood.
It was a tight game early on, with the two teams rarely separated by more than a few points. Brookwood led by three at the end of the first and second quarters. The Lady Bulldogs held strong in the first half and stayed consistent, ending the first half down by just three, 17-14.
It was the third quarter that really pushed Thomasville over the edge. The Lady Bulldogs got off to a hot start in the second half, outscoring the Lady Warriors 17-7 in the third quarter.
The Lady Warriors mounted a fourth-quarter comeback, cutting the lead to three with less than a minute to go. However, the Lady Bulldogs were able to pull away and secured a 42-36 victory.
Thomasville’s defense is what truly led them to victory. The Lady Warrior’s 36 points were their second-lowest point total of the season and they combined for just 13 points in the second and third quarters.
“Just a couple small adjustments and really started focusing on defense and making them understand that defense is what we need,” said Thomasville head coach Jeray Randall when asked about Thomasville’s third-quarter push. “That’s what really wins games. Not saying offense doesn’t help as well, but when we are locked in and focused on defense it helps create your offense.”
This win moves the Lady Bulldogs to 9-8 on the season and gives them their third road victory. This was their last non-region game as Thomasville will finish the season with seven straight region contests.
“Harmony (Bryant) didn’t play last night, Rhaniya Wilson just came back off an injury. Hopefully, this will give us the opportunity to get a full team so we can really see where we’re at,” Randall said about this upcoming stretch.
Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors move to 13-7 on the year and find themselves on a skid. After a four-game win streak in early January, the Lady Warriors have lost four of their last five, including two losses to Thomasville and a tough region loss to Terrell Academy. The Lady Warriors will end their season with three region contests against Terrell, Deerfield-Windsor, and Tiftarea.
