Four Brookwood juniors become Eagle Scouts
Brookwood School juniors Jacob Clark, Kent Grayson, Matthew Lauderdale, and Ben Watts earned the designation of Eagle Scout this month, which is the highest achievable rank in the Boy Scouts of America program. To become an Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts must earn a certain number of badges and undergo a review process.
Before becoming an Eagle Scout, troop members each had to complete a service project that would have a positive impact on their community. Clark designed and built ten duck boxes for Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville in order to improve their wildlife habitat.
Grayson initiated the build of a 130’ long and 6’ high picket fence at Thy Kingdom Come Church in Thomasville. Built of pressure treated wood, painted and capped with copper, Grayson used a multi-team approach to safely construct the fence.
“In addition to planning, paperwork and gathering of materials, I also navigated the permitting process with the City of Thomasville,” says Grayson. “The fence project not only needed the approval of Thy Kingdom Come Church, Troop 306, and the Suwannee River Council, but it also had to meet the approval of the City Engineering Department and the Building Inspector.”
With assistance from fellow scouts and leaders of Troop 306, Thy Kingdom Come Church is prepared for the addition of a playscape or picnic structure.
Inspired by Camp Rockmont and the Boy Scouts camps he attended from a young age, Lauderdale built a Gaga ball pit for Brookwood’s Lower School playground. “I had some of my best memories playing Gaga ball at camp,” Lauderdale states. “Every time I pass by the playground at Brookwood, it makes me happy to see kids playing in the pit. My hope is that it is giving them great memories and joy like a Gaga ball pit gave me.” With the help of his troop members, Lauderdale was able to complete the Gaga ball pit in one work day.
With a goal of creating shade for various Brookwood School common areas, Watts built four identical planters designed to hoist a sail. Large planters equipped with soil and flowers can be found outside of the Beverly Athletic Center and the Lower School playground.
