Brookwood Headmaster discusses football coaching search

The search is on for Brookwood to find its next head football coach.

Brookwood headmaster Randy Watts talked about the search and his hesitancy to put a timeline on when he would like to have Shane Boggs’ successor in place.

“We definitely haven’t put a timeline on it just because, in my experience with hiring, whenever you have a timeline, it’s wrong. But I would certainly love by Christmas to know who that person is and get them in place to really prepare for spring ball and certainly get ready for summer training and the fall,” Watts said.

Boggs resigned after the team’s regular season finale following an 0-9 campaign.

He had served as head coach for the last 12 years. Including Boggs’ two stops with the program, which included his first stint from 2003-08, and former coach Robert East’s tenure from 2009-12, Brookwood hasn’t had to look outside the program for a new coach in more than 20 years.

Watts and athletic director Jenny Lauderdale have a head start on finding the program’s next leader.

“Certainly, the sooner the better is good, but I also find in hiring the right person, you just have to have that patience. I think if we’re able to name that person by Christmas, I think that gives us a lot of time to achieve what we want. In the meantime, we’ve got eyes on the program,” Watts said.

Those eyes include Daryl Jones, the team’s defensive coordinator who is also overseeing the team’s offseason strength and conditioning program.

Brookwood’s coaching search has already included multiple meetings with assistant coaches, varsity players, and parents of youth that are part of the program. It has allowed Watts and Lauderdale to listen to their concerns about the program and the direction it is headed.

“What we’re doing right now is a lot of listening, because we want to get this right. It’s been a while since Brookwood has had a new head football coach. We really want to take the pulse,” Watts said. “We want a program that’s going to build excellent culture. We want a program that’s going to encourage kids to play and have a good experience. Certainly, we want to be competitive.”
