Lady Warriors lock down Panthers
The Brookwood Lady Warriors improved to 3-1 on Monday with a low-scoring victory over St. John Paul. It was a poor shooting night for Brookwood, but they made up for it with intensity on the defensive end leading to a 39-16 final score.
“If you can win on a night where you’re shooting rough just by playing good on the defensive end, that makes your team a lot more dangerous,” said Brookwood girls head coach Nik Schweikert.
“We started out a little bit slow, but I think a lot of times that happens when you’re on Thanksgiving break. So, first day of Thanksgiving break we started out the game a little bit slow, but they stepped up to the challenge and we had one of our best defensive efforts of the season. So, we’re just hoping that we can build off of what we did defensively.”
The Lady Warriors have been good this year, but have lacked a certain prowess on defense. This was evident in their loss to SGA, which saw them give up 69 points. Schweikert said a specific focus on defense in practice is what led to the Lady Warriors holding the Lady Panthers to just 16 points.
“I think we put a little bit more emphasis on practice defensively. This year with it being my first year, I think offense is a little bit more fun,” Schweikert said. “So, I think we’ve spent a lot of time on offense to start the season and we kind of were struggling a little defensively in a few games and so we really started focusing on trying to keep teams out of the paint.”
Schweikert went on to talk about his team’s defensive intensity and overall effort on that end of the floor saying, “I just think the effort and intensity on the defensive end and just rising up to the challenge and seeing that if we can put a good night together where we got it going on both ends, it makes us pretty tough.”
The game was not without it’s scoring as Carriyona Williams, Eliza Rosser, and Ainsley Jacobson each dropped a team-leading six points. Morgan Boggs led the team in rebounds with seven and Klaire von Hellens showed off some of the Lady Warriors defensive intensity with five steals.
The Lady Warriors have a nice break coming over the Thanksgiving holiday before they jump back into the fray. This coming week they will play four games in four days. The first is a home game against Grace Christian on December 2 with another home game against Crossroad Academy the following day. On December 4 Brookwood will travel to face St. John Paul and will finish with an away game against Florida High the following day
