Building the Foundation

Brandon French
Brookwood School’s Warrior Wrestling has continued its second year of the program by building a successful foundation. Just a season ago, Warrior Wrestling was only beginning. Now it has hosted its first-ever home wrestling tournament and has clinched top spots at the Middle School state championships - demonstrating its determination to dominate.

Brookwood’s Warrior Wrestling program began in Fall 2023. The program developed from a passionate interest from new families arriving to Brookwood School. The Athletic Department and the Booster Club were quick to respond to the interest, and they established Brookwood’s newest sport. Any new sport can be challenging, but a new sport that few, if any, students have participated in meant that the program really needed to be built from scratch.

A New Sport
Interest in the new sport began small, with a handful of mostly Senior students joining Warrior Wrestling’s
inaugural year. These hardy students stuck through the tough season - traveling to schools throughout the GIAA’s southwest region from Valdosta to Columbus. The team saw success within its first year with one Senior earning second place at the Region 2 Tournament, thereafter heading to the GIAA State Tournament. The second year saw new growth and new wrestlers. A larger Middle School team proved that there is a healthy future in line for the program. The excitement of the Middle School team’s success continued to generate energy and enthusiasm for Warrior Wrestling throughout the Lower and Middle Schools.

Success on the Mat
Carson Garcia ‘30, earned an incredible 1st Place at the Middle School State Tournament following an undefeated season. In only his second year wrestling, Carson has demonstrated exceptional competency in the sport of wrestling. The Middle School team also secured 3rd Place at the state tournament. In addition to Middle School success, the Varsity saw wrestlers earn 4th and 5th place at the region tournament, earning Wyatt Vaughn ‘26, a shot at the GIAA State Tournament.

Looking Ahead
With a solid foundation in place, Warrior Wrestling aims to drive recruitment for its upcoming season next Fall to ensure continual growth and momentum. Brookwood’s wrestling program is quickly becoming a sought-after destination for young wrestlers in Southwest Georgia. Founded on the principles of hard work, camaraderie, discipline, and a culture of brotherhood, Warrior Wrestling is on the path to becoming a proven wrestling dynasty of success.
