Brookwood School recognizes Veterans Day

The fifth grade students at Brookwood School were well-prepared to honor Veterans Day Last week’s assembly was a part of their year-long study of American history through the curriculum “Why America is Free.” The students opened the program with the presentation of the color guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Throughout the performance, each fifth grader had a speaking role about America’s history maintaining freedom through military support.
Students sang one stanza from each military branch’s service song during the performance, while veterans of those branches stood to be recognized when their song was sung.
“From the procession of our flag, recognition of each branch of the military, patriotic music, and narration by our fifth graders, our veterans felt valued and appreciated,” shared Lower School Director Mrs. Jennifer Newcombe. “This year, we welcomed approximately 10 veterans from many different branches of the military” Follow the performance, the students and families were treated to a talk by Captain Woodrow W Vaughan, USNR, Retired.
Capt. Vaughan spoke about the importance of supporting and recognizing veterans from all branches of service. He also emphasized the role that the United States has served in providing support and relief around the world.
Captain Vaughan was a varsity basketball player while a student at the United States Naval Academy and holds advanced degrees from Stanford University and the University of Virginia. Additionally, students at Brookwood.
“This program is a hallmark of the fifth grade experience at Brookwood,” stated Headmaster Dr. Randy Watts. “Our students have done a wonderful job of learning about America’s history and sharing their “Why America is Free” curriculum.
