Brookwood holds first wrestling camp

THOMASVILLE — While most kids use their summer to sleep in and do as little as possible, eight Brookwood lower school students can be found in the Beverly Athletic Center in the multipurpose room. Starting at 9 a.m. Monday- Thursday, these eight student are taking to the mat to learn the sport of wrestling, Brookwood’s newest athletic program.

“The goal is simply to get students interested in the sport,” said Warriors head wrestling coach Brandon French. “This is our first year having a wrestling team. So, it’s brand new and what I hope to do is try to develop interest so that there is a continual feeding going up through the ages.”

French, who wrestled in high school at Piedmont Academy, begins the day with warm-ups, then transitions into teaching the campers basic wrestling skills. The young Warriors get a chance not only to see a couple of Brookwood wrestlers compete, but they get to take the mat themselves and practice their newly learned skills.
“What they are learning are the basics,” French said. “They are learning what a stance is, they’re learning single leg, double leg take downs, a few tosses and a few throws.”

Brookwood’s first ever wrestling camp will continue through Thursday, June 27.
