Brookwood drops season finale

Brookwood’s frustrating season on the gridiron came to an end Friday night, dropping its regular season finale to GIAA Region 3-AAA rival Valwood 38-7.

The Warriors’ season ended with an 0-9 record and was outscored 369-94 over the nine games. Brookwood has now lost 11 straight games dating back to last year’s regular season’s finale.

The Valiants scored on their four first-half drives, led 29-0 at halftime, and were never threatened. “The big thing we talked about at half is it’s not like we didn’t have success. We won a whole bunch of plays, we just couldn’t win the critical plays. You win a critical third down on defense, you win a critical third down on offense and then you start to change momentum,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “It was a microcosm (of the season), that I don’t know that I’ve ever played nine games and felt like I caught less breaks.”

Quarterback Pearce Hightower threw for 95 yards and added 22 yards on the ground. Running back James Mizell scored the Warriors’ only touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 45-yard gallop. The Warriors held Valwood to just one touchdown after intermission.

“I am proud of the fight I saw. We went into fall camp with 25 kids, which is not enough, but we finished the season with 25 kids. This speaks to the resilience on their part,” Boggs said. “I think guys hang in there for a lot of different reasons. Some of them hang in there because they just flat love it. Some of them hang in there because they want to maintain their commitment to their teammates. Whatever it is, in today’s time, for all of them to hang in there, I’m proud of them for that.”

Valwood has outscored Brookwood 115-49 in the last two meetings.
