Brookwood remained perfect in this early stage of the season, defeating North Florida Christian 64-50. It was a tale of two halves for the 4-0 Warriors, an unfortunate theme that has developed in their first four games.
“I thought on the defensive side we were excellent. Offensively, we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Warriors head coach Nate VanDuyne.
The Warriors were excellent in the first half, building up a 20-6 lead at one point in the opening quarter. However, the Brookwood defense dissipated in the second half, allowing the Eagles to mount a small comeback, drawing within nine on the back of seven threes from two NFC players.
VanDuyne doesn’t seem too worried about the lack of consistency, however. While it is something the Warriors want to fix, they also recognize how early in the season it is and how much time they have to make adjustments.
“This morning was like the 25th practice. I mean, typically we average around 89 to 90 practices, so we’re early to where we still have a lot of time to get better,” VanDuyne said. “If we were at our peak right now it would be scary in a not positive way because that would mean we’ve already reached our ceiling. The positive thing is I don’t even think we are close to our ceiling.”
The chance to get better is something that excites Coach VanDuyne.
“That’s the beauty of a season. I think those that are outcome-driven, they really struggle with this,“ VanDuyne said. “I think it excites me the fact that I see that we have a lot of opportunity to keep getting better because that’s going to get us to where our goals are not the other way around.”
Brookwood’s next contest will be at home on Tuesday, December 3 against Crossroads Academy. They will then head out on their first road trip of the season, facing Maclay on December 6 and Westwood on December 10 before returning home on December 13 to face FAMU DRS.
