The Brookwood Warriors boys basketball team received its first loss of the season in overtime to Crossroads Academy. This was Brookwood’s first very close game as most of their games have been won by six or more points, but Crossroad put up a tough fight.
The Brookwood defense kept the Warriors in it as the offense struggled. They went into halftime down by two, having scored just 16 points, only seven in the second quarter.
“We just didn’t play well,” said Warriors head coach Nate VanDuyne. “They are an athletic team, they’re a quick team, they’re a team that’s hard to figure out just because they gamble a lot and fly around so much. At the end of the day, we did not play well.”
The Warriors were outscored or tied the Scorpions in every quarter except for the third. Brookwood would go on to lose to Crossroad Academy 48-47 in overtime.
For VanDuyne, he enjoyed the close game despite the unfortunate outcome. He believes that these games show who you really are as a team and are valuable to a team later in the season.
“I think, mentally, it’s these moments where you see what you’re made of. How resilient are you?” VanDuyne said. “Close games, they’re so much more valuable than these blowouts. You get real-time feedback as far as your execution, but also these are high-pressure minutes. Everybody who was on the court for really any minute of this game, they were valuable minutes just because of the intensity of the moment.”
The Warriors’ next home game will be against FAMU DRS on December 13, which comes after a pair of road games against Maclay and Westwood.
