Earlier in the season, Warriors head basketball coach Nate VanDuyne spoke about the importance of not peaking too early. He said after a 14-point win over NFC that if Brookwood was playing its best basketball in November it “would be scary in a not positive way”.
Since that statement, VanDuyne and the Warriors have gone 10-1 with some big wins including an 84-17 win over Westwood and their first region win of the year over Deerfield-Windsor, who Brookwood believes is their toughest region competition. The Warriors are averaging 64.7 points per game and are 14-1 on the season at time of writing. Despite the success, VanDuyne has mentioned needing to improve shooting-wise and has continued to push his players to not get complacent with early success.
Coming off wins over Maclay and CLA, VanDuyne repeatedly mentioned how they were unhappy with how they played. They were happy to get the win but not with how they won.
“We’ve preached so much on the process and how are things going on the micro as much as just the macro of the outcome of the game,” VanDuyne said. “We just can not become frustrated with the process because, right now, I do think the process is good. We just have to keep on moving forward with it.”
The process has worked as well, with the Warriors improving their record. Last season, through their first 15 games, Brookwood was 13-2 and averaging 63.1 points per game. This season started off with a 99-point game and has seen the Warriors drop 70 or more points three times. They’ve beaten solid squads like SGA, Maclay, and Deerfield-Windsor and are most people’s pick to repeat as region champions.
Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but one thing is for sure. VanDuyne’s process works and the Warriors have a clear path to the history books.
