Brookwood boys basketball notches 20th victory

HAHIRA – Not playing for multiple days nearly derailed the Brookwood Warriors’ chances of snagging their twentieth win on Friday night at Valwood.

Sidelined because of last week’s rare South Georgia winter storm, the Warriors appeared sluggish for much of their GIAA region matchup with the Valiants. But the Warriors’ defensive intensity and talent overwhelmed the Valiants in the second half, leading to a 58-46 victory.

Brookwood improved to 20-1 and 5-0 in region play.

“It’s what I told them before the game, when you take three to four days off like what we had because of the weather, the odds of us shooting it well are not very likely,” Brookwood coach Nate VanDuyne said. “For us to get going, you’ve got to win all those 50-50 effort battles. During that stretch (in the third quarter) we obviously did, which proved to be the difference in the game. In no way, shape, or form did we play well tonight. They did a real good job in keeping Walker (Jackson) in check, and not a whole lot of teams have had success in doing that.”

Brookwood outscored Valwood 21-13 in the third quarter, helping stretch out a nine-point halftime lead. The Warriors forced turnovers and got out in transition, which helped offset a difficult shooting night.

Jackson led Brookwood Thomas County Central will be much younger this year than in past seasons. with 14 points, including several thunderous dunks. Thomas Lee added 11 points, including three three-pointers, and Roscoe Jones also chipped in 11.

Brookwood’s girls were also victorious, rolling past the Lady Valiants 51-17. with nine points each. Ava Bodell added eight. The Lady Warriors, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 13-6 and 4-1 in region play.

The Lady Warriors throttled the Lady Valiants in the second half, outscoring the home team 33-7 in the third and fourth quarters. Brookwood held an 18-10 lead at intermission.
