Terrell Academy came out swinging, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Tuesday’s game, but Brookwood stormed back with seven unanswered runs and held on for a 7-6 victory at Terrell Academy.
The Eagles fought back late, scoring once in the fifth on a Brookwood error and again in the sixth when Harrison Dozier crossed the plate after another defensive miscue. Trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh, Terrell Academy had a chance to tie the game, but Brookwood’s defense held firm.
Brooks Strickland led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jace Berry, and moved to third on a groundout from Jack Hampson. However, the Eagles couldn’t push him across, leaving the tying run stranded just 90 feet away.
Coach Walker: “Brookwood Outplayed Us”
After the game, Terrell Academy Head Coach Ashley Walker credited Brookwood for its execution.
“They pitched it better than we did, and they hit it better than we did in crucial situations,” Walker said. “They ran the bases better than we did. We were better in one phase of the game, and when that happens, it’s hard to win close games.”
Walker also pointed to his team’s mental approach as an area that needs improvement.
“We struggled with the mental side of situations, and it cost us an opportunity to win,” he said.
How It Happened
Terrell Academy’s four-run first inning was fueled by two walks, a hit batsman, and singles from Tucker Lanza, Kyle Hall, and Landon Misamore. But Brookwood responded quickly, plating seven runs to take control of the game.
Sophomore right-hander Brody Cowart started on the mound, pitching 3 2/3 innings while allowing six runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out two before Landon Rogers took over in relief. Rogers pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out five batters.
Despite keeping the game within reach, Terrell Academy couldn’t capitalize on key opportunities late.
“All credit goes to Brookwood, they outplayed us,” Walker said. “We played a pretty clean game, we just didn’t handle adversity well, and we have to do hard better!”
