The Brookwood Warriors are still looking for their first win of the season as they welcome Maclay out of Tallahassee.
Maclay will present a special kind of challenge to the Warriors with the way they throw the ball. Marauders quarterback George Grant, whose brother Michael is redshirting at Florida State, can really rip it. He lit up Maclay’s week one opponent Windham in Ireland for 246 yards and four touchdowns on 20 completions last week.
In the same breath, Maclay has a solid run game, which gives them a very balanced and threatening attack that makes defenses think twice in coverage.
“I’ve been extremely pleased with the way our kids have approached our film time to review the last game and prepare for the next one,” said Warriors head coach Shane Boggs. “We’ve made some progress, but we expected a different kind of opponent in Maclay. They can certainly run the ball, but they’ve got a really gifted quarterback. So, we’ll have to defend the whole field.”
Boggs went on to say that they will be playing more guys one-way. Brookwood has often run players both ways, but in a game like this where a defense is forced to cover the entire field legs can get tired quickly. So, Brookwood will look to play more guys to keep the defense quick and fresh.
On the offensive side, Boggs described Maclay’s defense as “multiple” with a lot of different looks, which could force Brookwood to be a bit more dynamic on offense.
“I would call Maclay multiple on defense. We’re certainly going to see a little bit of pressure, but also going to see some man coverage,” Boggs said. “Regardless of what your opponent is doing we have to make sure Brookwood doesn’t beat Brookwood.”
The Warriors will have to deal with some quarterback issues. The Warriors have been running a two quarterback system to begin the season as Pearce Hightower and Roland Waldrop try to earn the solo starting spot. However, Hightower suffered what Boggs called a “tweak” in his wrist against Terrell, leading Waldrop to finish out the game. Hightower is currently listed as questionable for Friday nights game with the Warriors expecting to solidify his status on Thursday.
Brookwood will host Maclay on Friday night in their home opener at 7:30 p.m.
