Friday morning, members of the Horne family broke ground at the site of their future Downtown Cairo offices. The lot is located at 140 1st Street and will be the offices of Ethan Jackson Investments.
Following Thursday night’s rainstorms, the family gathered and lined up on the freshly-damp soil with over half a dozen shovels. Just as a train passed on the nearby tracks and disappeared behind the trees, the family dug into the earth, marking the beginning of their new development.
The groundbreakers, joined by family members, friends and others involved in the project, threw dirt in the air in celebration.
“We do development, construction and property management, and we’ve experienced a lot of growth over the last two years,” Jeremiah Horne said. “We have a year’s worth of work in front of us.”
Explaining the purpose behind the new development, Horne said the idea behind it
is to attract those looking to move for work. He believes it will bring them to Cairo, since it will be in the heart of their downtown, making it a “substantial investment.”
The family expects the offices to be finished close to Christmas.
Jeremiah, Jennifer and Justin Horne are local business owners and funded this development and are extremely proud to be building on a piece of land with deep family history. Jeremiah and Justin’s father’s law office once stood on the very lot that they broke ground on Friday.
“We’re just excited being Downtown Cairo on a piece of property that we have a family history with,” Horne said.
The total investment of the historic project, which includes 14 individual offices, a conference room, cubical space and atrium is $1.3 million, and will house three different companies.
The space will allow for up to 25 new jobs to be brought into Downtown Cairo, having already added 10 just during the development phase.
The City of Cairo encourages anyone else interested in the development of the downtown corridor to reach out to them.
